Should you spend your workout lifting weights—or getting your heart rate up?

It’s one of the most common fitness questions, but the answer doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Both strength training and cardiovascular exercise have an important place in a well-rounded fitness routine. And sometimes, you can get a little of both in the same workout.

What Does Strength Training Do?

Strength training challenges your muscles against resistance, whether that’s dumbbells, resistance bands, suspension straps, or your own body weight.

For women, building strength isn’t just about changing how your body looks. It can help you feel more capable in everyday life—from carrying groceries and picking up kids to climbing stairs and simply moving with more confidence.

And strength training becomes increasingly important as we age, helping support muscle mass, bone health, balance, and overall function.

What About Cardio?

Cardiovascular exercise challenges your heart and lungs and helps build endurance.

But cardio doesn’t have to mean spending an hour on a treadmill.

Dancing, stepping, boxing, cycling, jumping, and other forms of movement can all get your heart pumping—and when you find something you genuinely enjoy, cardio can feel a whole lot less like a chore.

So…Which One Is Better?

We think that’s the wrong question.

Instead, ask:

What does my body need this week?

Maybe Monday is a strength day.

Tuesday might be dance fitness.

Later in the week, you may need Pilates or stretching.

And some days, you might want a workout that combines multiple elements at once.

That’s one of the reasons we believe so strongly in offering variety at Flow Fitness Boutique. You don’t have to pick one style of fitness and stick with it forever. Different workouts challenge your body in different ways—and they keep things interesting.

Meet in the Middle With Sculpt + Box

Our Sculpt + Box class is a perfect example of what happens when strength and cardio come together.

You’ll alternate between boxing-inspired cardio and strength/sculpting exercises, challenging your muscles while getting your heart rate up.

And no—you don’t need any boxing experience.

You’re not stepping into a boxing ring. 😉

You’re learning approachable boxing-inspired movements, working up a sweat, building strength, and probably punching out a little stress while you’re at it.

Fitness Doesn’t Have to Fit Into One Box

Some women love lifting heavy.

Some want to dance.

Some love Pilates.

Some want to punch something after a long day. 😂

And plenty of us want all of the above.

Your fitness routine doesn’t need to fit neatly into one category to be effective. In fact, finding different ways to move may be exactly what keeps you interested enough to continue.

At Flow, that’s the whole idea.

Strength. Cardio. Flexibility. And plenty of fun mixed in between.

Find the combination that works for you—and don’t be afraid to change it up along the way. 🤍
